If it is a feature to have companions "lost" - i do not like it. I want to fire them not "kill" them. I may have a save available but the behavior is confirmed by me. I am a mercenary in a war and i am trying to dismiss companions. Also became a free agent and the same behavior. Try'd all options from the conversation - all make : companion "lost".
The second way to dismiss a companion is by using a clan menu. First, you should open this menu using primary hotkey L. After that, scroll down to see all companions grouped in the thematic list.
