I own a 2012 Mondeo Mk4. It is a 2.0Tdci (140). i recently got the Engine Malfunction warning. On diagnostics it came up as a DPF regen failure. There has been no loss of power. The garage reset it and I took the car on a good motorway blast and stayed in 4th gear to keep the revs nice and high. About 2 weeks passed and the warning came back on. Since the DPFE sensor relays information to the PCM, the latter can activate this warning light if the sensor is sending irregular signals or isn’t sending information at all. Keep in mind that more than one issue can trigger the check engine light, so it’s best to check for other symptoms before chalking it up as a faulty DPFE sensor.
